Most quotation delays are not commercial. They are informational: the fabricator cannot price what was not specified, so the job waits for clarification.
The six data points
- Line size and schedule — nominal diameter and wall thickness, with the piping class if you have one.
- Material — carbon steel, stainless grade, chrome-moly or alloy, plus any impact or hardness requirement.
- Code and examination — B31.3 normal or severe service, and the NDE extent required.
- End preparation — flanged, beveled, threaded or socket weld, with flange facing and rating.
- Coating or insulation — surface preparation level, system and where it stops.
- Delivery date — the date the spool must be on site, not the date you need a price.
The three omissions that cause rework
Missing flange ratings, unspecified test medium, and coating that conflicts with the field weld zones. Each one stops fabrication or forces a rework cycle after delivery.
What good looks like
An isometric with dimensions, bill of materials and piping class note attached is enough for an accurate quote. If you only have a line list, say so — engineering can produce the isometrics before fabrication.
